The Biggest Issues You and Our Political Analysts Say About the Incoming Jacksonville Mayor

jacksonville, florida – In March, Jacksonville voters turn in their ballots for the city’s next mayor. Republican Lenny Curry has a limited term, and someone new will be taking the seat.

There are a lot of people who want to be the next mayor of Jacksonville. He’s eight to be exact. The first scheduled debate will be held on Monday at the Rotary Club of Jacksonville. Republican Dan Davis chose not to attend.

As part of the Your Voice Matters campaign, we asked them what they thought was the biggest challenge facing the incoming mayor.

“We can clean up areas of our town where wealthy people don’t live,” voter Obie Langley told News4JAX.

“It’s about homelessness and overall safety,” Hannah Mangum said.

This is what we heard from News4JAX insiders like Colleen who wrote:

“It’s a crime, nothing else to worry about, it’s just a crime. I know every big city has it, but it’s getting out of hand.”

We spoke with News4JAX political analyst Rick Mullaney of the University of Jacksonville Public Policy Institute about his thoughts on the challenges facing the city’s new mayor.

He mentioned quite a few notable things.

“Regarding stadiums and sports complexes as a whole, there’s been a huge shift to infrastructure as you can see from the potential multi-billion dollar deal with Jaguar, the six-cent gas tax, the crime problem, the Emerald Trail of course, and the massive referendum. INVESTMENT.Financing for education and growth in Jacksonville — when capital is flowing here and growth is growing here, by the way, it’s good,” Mullaney said. “But it’s also a challenge. I mean, the next mayor has his hands full.”

And some of these other issues have to do with minority neighborhoods.

“They don’t seem to have anyone to speak for them,” Carolyn Miles said.

Insider Endia Freeman agreed, writing: The North Side and West Side are underserved due to lack of youth and senior centers.

Notably, Duval County was in the red in the midterm elections, and voters re-elected Governor Ron DeSantis and Senator Marco Rubio. This is unlike the pale Duval County statewide elections we saw in 2018 and 2020.

The unanswered question: Will the momentum carry over to the Republican Party this spring?
