Germany’s BioNTech to build an African vaccine plant from 2022

German pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech, which developed the coronavirus vaccine, said Tuesday that they are aiming to begin building a vaccine plant in Africa next year.

The location of the facility was unclear, but BioNTech said it is working with both Rwandan and Senegalese authorities and plans to begin construction in “mid-2022.”

The factory initially has the capacity to produce about 50 million Vaccine dose Every year, the German company said.

In August, BioNTech announced plans to build a “sustainable vaccine production capacity” in Rwanda and Senegal to produce not only the COVID-19 vaccine, but also the mRNA-based malaria and tuberculosis vaccines.

“We will work together to build a regional production network to support access to African vaccines produced in Africa,” said Wool Shahin, co-founder of BioNTech, on Tuesday.

In July, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that they have partnered with the Biovac Group to bottle the COVID-19 vaccine in Cape Town, South Africa since 2022.

Currently, only 1 percent of the vaccines used in Africa are manufactured on the African continent. The African Union wants to increase this percentage to 60 percent by 2040.

US pharmaceutical giant Moderna also announced plans to build a vaccine plant in Africa earlier this month.

More than 10 months after the world’s first COVID shot was given, and nearly two years after the pandemic itself occurred, only 5% of eligible Africans are fully immunized.

This issue reveals that Africa is heavily dependent on imported vaccines and its technology is weak compared to Europe, China and the United States.
