Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Emergency Management Agency announced on Wednesday that the US Small and Medium Business Administration has granted the state’s request for a disaster declaration. This will make disaster loans available to individuals and businesses affected by the January 2022 tornado in southwestern Florida. This declaration provides additional relief in the form of low-interest loans to Charlotte, Collier, Glaze, Hendery, and Lee counties.
This announcement follows FEMA’s decision to reject FDEM’s appeal for individual support to victims.
Disaster loans available through this declaration include:
- Business Physical Disaster Loans – Loans to businesses to repair or replace business-owned disaster-damaged assets such as real estate, inventory, consumables, machinery, and equipment. Companies of all sizes are also eligible. It also covers private non-profit organizations such as charities, churches and private universities.
- Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) – SMEs, small agricultural cooperatives, SMEs engaged in aquaculture, and most private non-profit organizations of all sizes are the direct consequences of a disaster. These loans are intended to support you throughout the disaster recovery period.
- Home Disaster Loan – A loan to a homeowner or renter to repair or replace real estate and personal property damaged by a disaster, including a car.
Disaster loan applicants can apply online or download the application using the electronic loan application. Through the SBA’s secure website..
The completed loan application should be submitted to the SBA by July 1, 2022 for physical disaster loans and by February 2, 2023 for economic accidents and disaster loans.

Florida continues to raise additional relief funding through the tornado portal in southwestern Florida. Last week, FDEM distributed 66 additional relief funds to the victims for a total of $ 660,000. To date, a total of more than $ 1.09 million has been distributed through the portal.
