Guatemalan lawmakers and rights authorities called for an investigation into 30,000 fake COVID-19 tests purchased by public health authorities on Monday.
The 30,000 tests and test materials cost nearly $ 1 million to the Ministry of Public Health in Central America, but turned out to be unreliable.
“In the midst of a humanitarian crisis, even the purchase of the COVID-19 test is unlikely to be corrupt,” said Holderon Rodas, head of the national human rights institution, on Monday.
A private Guatemalan company says it bought the test from a US company that denied selling the test.
Edwin Asturias, whose former worked on a pandemic in Guatemala, asked on his Twitter account that he could have unknowingly infected others by relying on false negatives in the test.
Health Minister Amelia Flores has asked prosecutors to investigate Guatemalan company representatives and former health officials for possible fraud, perjury and other misconduct.
In Guatemala, 171,289 coronaviruses have occurred, killing 6,306 people.
