JSO Shines Light on 1995 JSO Criminal Murder Case

jacksonville, florida – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department is focusing on the murder of JSO detective Ronnie Miller, 28, and hopes someone in the community can help find the culprit.

Detective Miller was killed on May 6, 1995 while answering a robbery call.

The robbery was reported at a friend of Miller’s firm at 302 Basswood Street, but the firm no longer exists and only the fence surrounding the vacant lot remains.

Miller was familiar with the area and knew the owner, so he answered the call that evening.

When officers on duty appeared to respond, Miller said it was likely a false alarm and that she could handle it herself.

Travis Oliver, one of the unsolved homicide detectives, said there could have been some telltale signs that the store had been robbed.

“At the time, the owner had guard dogs, so if someone had robbed the store, they would have attacked,” Oliver said.

Miller was killed about 10 to 15 minutes after he let police go home.

Miller and his friend, the owner of the store, were talking when someone who was trying to rob them approached and shot them dead.

Detective Miller died at the scene, but his friend drove himself to the hospital and continues to cooperate with the investigation.

“He gave an explanation, but of course if you were being shot at the same time you were being briefed, that wouldn’t be accurate,” Oliver said.

A few clues came and went, but nothing led the detectives to the culprit.

“One of the problems we have is the lack of physical evidence and testimony,” Oliver said.

If you know anything about this incident, please call the JSO or Crimestoppers.
