Anti-Defamation League condemns recent string of fake threats made to synagogues across US

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — The Anti-Defamation League is condemning a recent string of so-call “swatting” incidents at synagogues.

The organization says people have called in fake threats over the past four weekends, some of which have disrupted prayer services.

At least 26 synagogues and two ADL offices in 12 states have been targeted.

The ADL believes the callers are targeting synagogues that livestream their services.

No arrests have been made so far.

On Saturday at around 7 p.m., a suspect approached Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun Synagogue located on East 85th Street.

Police are searching for a suspect who they say vandalized the synagogue while a class was being taught inside by associate Rabbi Roy Feldman.

“Our Jewish community has experienced anti-Semitism for thousands of years. We’ve been resilient for thousands of years,” said Rabbi Feldman.

The bulletin boards outside the synagogue was defaced with marker. Thankfully, they were able to wipe away the scribble.

For congregants coming to service on Sunday night, it was unnerving to learn their house of worship was not respected.

“I think anybody who is going to write something on the Shul on any of our property, it’s a hate crime, and it’s scary,” said Gail Propp.

“It’s unsafe. I take the train to the Bronx every day. I’m a physician. I used to wear my skullcap on the train, now I basically wear a hat the last couple of years cause I don’t feel safe,” added Dr. Larry Baruch.

No one was injured .

The suspect is described as having short black hair, a slim build, and was seen wearing a white tank top with camouflage shorts, officials said.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating this incident. No arrests have been made.
