Deep in the Sahara Desert is one of the best-preserved craters on the planet. On Asteroid Day, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission will take over Mauritania’s almost completely circular tenumarker.

The width of the Tenou Crater visible in the center of the image is 1.9km.Rim crater It rises to a height of about 110 m from the base, but the bottom of the crater is covered with a layer of sediment about 200-300 m thick.

It has long been debated whether craters were formed by volcanoes or meteorites. The rocks scattered around the crater, like basalt, created the impression of an ancient volcano. However, closer examination of the structure revealed that the hardened “lava” of the crater was actually a rock melted by the impact of a meteorite.

Craters are located on vast plains of very old rocks that were deposited hundreds of millions of years before the first dinosaurs walked the earth. Tenuma inhabits ancient rocks, but is much younger and aged 10,000 to 30,000 years.

More than one million asteroids have been discovered in our solar system, and more are expected to be there. ESA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, ESA’s Near-Earth Object Center, and astronomers around the world aim to work together to keep us safe by knowing in advance if an asteroid has been discovered. ..
