A US-27 going the wrong way developed into a fatal crash Sunday morning involving two Immokalee men in Highlands County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 69-year-old Sebring man in the passenger seat died after a head-on collision with a US-27.

A 69-year-old man from Sebring and a 41-year-old woman from Lake Placid were traveling in reverse on a US-27. They were traveling north of the intersection of State Route 70, on the southbound inside lane of State Route 27.

Meanwhile, two men from Immokalee were driving south on the southbound inside lane of US-27 approaching the SR-70 intersection.

The fronts of the cars then collided with each other.

After the collision, the car that was traveling in the wrong direction changed direction, pushed out of the roadway, and stopped on the shoulder of the grass on the west side.

A 69-year-old man was reportedly confirmed dead at the scene and was the only person not wearing a seat belt, according to reports. The driver suffered minor injuries in the accident.

A passenger in the other car, a 30-year-old man from Immokalee, was seriously injured in the crash. However, the driver, his 23-year-old man from Immokalee, suffered minor injuries.

The crash is under investigation.
