Severe geomagnetic storm makes northern lights visible over New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, northern lights: NOAA

Look up at the night sky from late Sunday through Monday and you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the area.

Connecticut, New Jersey and New York are all reaching the Aurora Borealis on Sunday night due to extreme geomagnetic storms.

The storm was first enacted by a solar flare that erupted on the Sun Friday afternoon.

A solar flare is an explosion that occurs on the surface of the sun, releasing a burst of electromagnetic radiation.

The explosion released “one billion tons of superheated, magnetized gas from the sun.” NOAAThat gas is called plasma.

The burst of plasma then interacts with Earth’s atmosphere, producing colorful lights, also known as auroras.

Auroras can be seen in the northern hemisphere and northern lights in the southern hemisphere.

The plasma discharge reached Earth in two days and caused a severe geomagnetic storm rated 4 out of 5 on the NOAA scale.

“The geomagnetic storm arrived earlier than expected and was much stronger than expected,” NOAA said.

Geomagnetic storms can cause anomalies in power grids and radio communications. However, if they continue into the evening, the aurora may become visible in areas where the aurora is not visible.
