Video shows a handcuffed street assault suspect attempting to flee Nassau County lawmakers

Nassau County, Florida – It was just after 12:30 p.m. last Thursday, at a gas station on State Route 200, Nassau County lawmakers surrounded the red Toyota Prius driven by Divine McLeod, 28.

Shortly before the exchange, a woman called 911 and McLeod pulled up next to her after he blocked her in traffic on Interstate 95, pointed a gun and threatened to verbally shoot her. Told. A video obtained by News4JAX showed lawmakers ordering McLeod out of the car.

“Where is he?

The deputy told him to “get out of the car,” but McLeod refused, the video shows.

Police pulled him out of the car and smashed him to the ground after ignoring his deputy’s orders.

Next, the lieutenant asked about the bag that was tied around McLeod’s waist. Officers later said they found two loaded handguns inside.

The deputies finally got the bag and handcuffed McLeod. However, when they tried to get him into the patrol, McLeod began running while handcuffed, leading the deputies in a short foot chase across Westbound State Route 200. He caused an oncoming vehicle to hit the brakes, then tripped and fell into the median a few seconds later.

“Okay, I’m depressed. I swear I won’t run anymore,” he said.

One of the guns found was reportedly stolen from Ocala. Later, they found a loaded 3rd handgun in his passenger seat.

Officers said they believed McLeod was trying to pull one of the guns out of his bag while he was on the ground.

In 2017, he was one of three suspects charged with murder in North Carolina after a drug deal turned into a failed armed robbery. His murder charges were subsequently reduced to manslaughter and armed robbery after he received a plea bargain and testified against other co-defendants.

He will be released from prison in 2021.

The incident brought back a difficult memory for Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.

“In my mind, I remember the incident when Deputy Oliver ran into the suspect in pursuit,” he said.

He’s referring to Nassau County Deputy Rep. Eric Oliver, who died in 2016 after being hit by a car while chasing a man across the road. Oliver was helping with border security when he was murdered.

“The whole situation was dangerous,” Leeper said of last week’s incident. “Not only is he carrying a weapon, he is crossing a busy road. He may have been hit. Lawmakers may have been hit.”

Sheriff Reaper says the public needs to understand that when law enforcement officers are chasing a suspect on foot, they’re focusing their lasers on the suspect, not what’s going on around them. Stated.

That’s what makes the chase even more dangerous, he says, because he doesn’t want to lose track of what the suspect is doing during the chase.
