Legislation in Florida and the US stirring interest among major providers

Recent changes to federal gambling laws in the USA have allowed the legality of sports betting to be decided by individual states. Many states have jumped at the chance to allow sports betting, which creates jobs and brings in more taxes – and Florida is joining the sports betting party.

Historically, the Sunshine State has held restricted gambling laws with limited games available through casinos operated by native people of the land, namely the Seminole Tribe of Florida. But the local industry and laws are being shaken up, which is stirring lots of attention among game providers and sportsbook operators.

Big players in the industry like Playtech and Evolution Gaming have already expanded into the USA to offer their new and improved live casino games to a fresh market. Learn more about these changes and what the future may hold for Florida’s gambling industry here.

New gambling laws in Florida

Florida’s gambling laws are being revolutionised by a string of changes. The first significant shift is the legalisation of sports betting, which comes off the back of the Federal Government approving sports betting and handing jurisdiction to individual states. Each state can decide whether to legalise sports betting or not, with most doing so or preparing to do so. Florida is one of the states that will legalise sports betting for the first time in its history, granting permission to the Seminole Tribe to offer a sportsbook within the government-tribe compact. Sports betting will be offered as a form of online gambling by the tribe. The deal is mutually beneficial and expected to generate $20 billion for the state over the 30-year period.

Also part of the new gambling laws, the Seminole Tribe will be allowed to operate craps and roulette games in its seven local casinos. Previously only a handful of games were permitted, and the aforementioned were illegal. Creating more opportunities to play these games in person at Florida casinos or through casino sites could have an adverse effect on “grey market” online casinos where some locals could still access these games, possibly using a VPN.

The reaction to the new laws

There have been some opponents to the new deal, which was quietly signed off earlier this year. The opponents, including Miami Beach’s Mayor, Dan Gelber, suggests the deal could create gambling problems, whereas others have gone as far as to state that the agreement is fundamentally unconstitutional.

There has been a different reaction among casino game development companies. Big companies that create the leading roulette and craps games for online casinos like Evolution Gaming and Playtech are excited about the changes to gambling laws across the USA. There is considerable interest in the new market, and partnerships could be built to penetrate “fresh market” states like Florida.
