Israeli scuba diver discovers ancient crusader sword off the country’s Mediterranean coast

Jerusalem-Israeli scuba divers have recovered an ancient sword off the country’s Mediterranean coast, experts say.

According to the Israeli Antiquities Department, the man was diving in northern Israel over the weekend and found a pile of ancient relics such as anchors, pottery, and a one-meter-long sword.

When the diver was discovered, he was in a body of water about 150 meters (170 yards) offshore and 5 meters (5.5 yards) deep.

According to experts, the area provides shelter for ancient ships and has many archaeological treasures dating back 4,000 years. However, such discoveries can be elusive as the sand changes constantly.

Fearing that his findings would be buried, officials said the diver landed the sword and delivered it to government experts. The weapon is estimated to be 900 years old.

“It was found covered with marine life, but apparently made of iron,” said Nil Distelfeld, an inspector of the authorities’ anti-robbery unit. “With knights, armor and swords, it’s exciting to take you to another era 900 years ago and encounter such personal objects.”

The sword is washed and further analyzed. Meanwhile, the diver identified as Shlomi Katzin was given a letter of appreciation for good citizenship.
