Thousands flock to Brooklyn for grand finale of three-day Juneteenth festival

Prospect Park, Brooklyn (WABC) — Thousands gathered in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for the grand finale of the three-day Juneteenth festival.

this is 14th year showcasing black history, culture and the importance of holidays.

The free event offered family fun, including music performances, fashion shows, and dining. This event had a special meaning for my father.

“There is a lot of prejudice against black fathers not attending, and I want them to know that I will always stand by them no matter what,” said Ethan Souvenir.

They’re not just celebrating Father’s Day, they’re celebrating Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas.

Also known as “Freedom Day,” work continues for some.

“We want to change the community in terms of how they see themselves and their culture,” said Athenia Rodney, CEO and Founder of Juneteenth NYC.

New this year – Event organizer Juneteenth NYC has partnered with Dad Gang’s CEO. The Dud Gang aims to redefine the story of being a black father.

“We lead our families to move, to be free, to celebrate freedom. Celebrating fatherhood means everything to us. We need people to see it in real time,” said Dad Gunn. CEO Sean Williams.

New York City’s three-day Juneteenth Festival is the 14th annual celebration of the importance of black history, culture and holidays.

Organizers expected more than 15,000 visitors on Sunday alone.

For Rodney, this is personal.

“That’s where we all started, our history,” Rodney said.

She hopes Juneteenth NYC will continue to grow.
