But whether you’re planning to catch a flight this weekend or you’re heading out, it’s important to be aware of travel scams, especially spur-of-the-moment trips.

So far this year, Americans have reported losing more than $265,000 to travel fraud. The average loss last year was $600. Now, the Better Business Bureau shares tips on how to avoid getting scammed and have a good vacation.

First, plan ahead. Generally, the sooner you book, the better the price and the lower the risk that your destination will definitely be booked. This locks in the price and prevents later price spikes.

Avoid extensive internet searches. Typing phrases like ‘best deals’ into a search engine can bring up websites that look official but are only meant to deceive people.

Beware of travel scams. Beware of calls or letters claiming “free travel,” or websites offering ridiculously high fares.

Please do your homework.

Research the business and read customer reviews before paying for a hotel or service.

Get all travel details in writing before making final payment. This should include total costs, restrictions, cancellation charges, airline and hotel names. Also consider travel insurance. Travel insurance covers things like trip cancellations and medical emergencies.

Finally, pay with a credit card. Paying with a credit card provides additional protection in the event of a problem booking your trip.

The Better Business Bureau also recommends not posting travel photos or videos while you’re out and about.

According to the BBB, this will allow thieves to know that no one is home.
