Kendrick Lamar Releases New Single, His First Since ‘Not Like Us’

Kendrick Lamar has surprised fans with a new single titled “Watch the Party Die,” which he unveiled on his Instagram page. The five-minute track features references to notable figures like Christian rapper Lecrae, producer Terrace Martin, and what appears to be a nod to DJ Akademiks. In one verse, Lamar addresses a “radio personality pushing propaganda for salary,” implying that such figures may eventually face consequences.

The song also hints at ongoing tensions with Drake, with Lamar rapping, “Just walked that man down, that’ll do everyone a solid / It’s love but tough love, sometimes you gotta result in violence.” The cover art, showcasing a pair of scuffed sneakers, seems to be a subtle jab at Drake’s single cover for “Push Ups,” which mocked Lamar’s shoe size.

This release marks Lamar’s first new music since his high-profile track “Not Like Us.” The single, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May, was a significant hit, topping several charts including Hot Rap Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and Streaming Songs, and reaching No. 2 on the Song of the Summer chart.

Lamar’s latest track drops just as he is announced as the performer for the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime show. This will be his second appearance at the halftime show, following his performance during Dr. Dre’s 2022 all-star set alongside Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent.

In discussing his upcoming Halftime show performance, Lamar stated, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”
