13-year-old girl and dog attacked by coyote in Maplewood, New Jersey

Maplewood, NJ (WABC) — A 13-year-old girl, woman and dog were attacked by a coyote in Maplewood, New Jersey on Friday.

According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the attack occurred just after 3:00 p.m. on the South Mountain Reservation off Bear Lane.

A coyote attacked a 13-year-old girl and her dog. The girl suffered a stab wound to her leg and she was taken to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.

Her dog is in critical condition and is being treated at a local animal hospital.

Separately, a woman was also bitten. Nothing is said about her condition.

Police said they are searching for the coyote and will dispose of it if found. The search will resume on Saturday if not found by sunset.

Police believe the coyote had rabies because coyotes traveled in packs, whereas the coyote was solitary.

Essex County Administrator Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. said out of an abundance of caution, Crest Drive and South Mountain Dog Park will be closed until Saturday.

He urged people visiting the settlement to exercise caution.
