Little Italy’s historic cheese shop, Alleva Diary, is on the verge of closing due to a COVID pandemic

Little Italy (WABC) in Manhattan-Little Italy’s company, which claims to be the oldest cheese shop in the country, struggles to survive a pandemic despite its history of overcoming monumental challenges.

Alleva Dairy is located on the corner of Mulberry and Grand in the heart of Little Italy.

It is highly regarded as the oldest cheese shop in Japan. They have been making homemade Italian cheese since 1892.

They survived depression. However, it is not yet known if they can survive COVID.

“If Alleva Dairy is closed, it’s the cornerstone of Little Italy, and tradition and culture. If we leave, another part of history will move south,” said Karen King, owner of Alleva Dairy.

When tourism stopped badly two years ago, owner Karen King kept the cheese shop open. And she started selling gourmet meals to go to the closed New Yorkers at her house.

“Everyone wants to take our meatballs home. We make great meatballs,” King said.

And now we sell homemade gelato and homemade cannoli outdoors.

They expanded beyond cheese. They aren’t afraid of trying to stay alive, but the owner tells witness news reporter Lucy Yang that he needs help and mercy from the landlord.

Rent is over $ 23,000 per month. King rents two years’ worth of backrent. That’s over $ 500,000.

Her small business loan recently came in for half that amount. But she says her landlord has pre-claimed all the money that King doesn’t have.

“There were so many tears. There was a day when I was hiding under my cover thinking I couldn’t do this,” she said. “Then I will stand up and fight. I will be stronger. I will be stronger.”

When New York reopens, the owner is confident she will eventually be able to pay the rest of the rent.

The question is whether the judge will give her time, or will Alleva Dairy’s 130-year history come to a bitter end.

“I need a little help. I need a little help,” King said.
