Los Angeles County Sheriffs will announce on Wednesday why golf icon Tiger Woods crashed an SUV in Southern California earlier this year. The athlete was seriously injured in the wreck.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva had previously stated that the detective had identified the cause of the crash, but did not release him because of privacy concerns and the need for Woods’ permission to leak information.
“We will discuss the findings of a recent road accident involving Tiger Woods, including reports of causes and conflicts,” a sheriff said at a press conference Wednesday morning in Los Angeles.
It wasn’t immediately clear on Tuesday whether Woods, who previously named his yacht “privacy,” had any involvement in the expected announcement.
Woods from the Los Angeles area was returning to host his PGA tournament, Genesis Invitational, at the Riviera Country Club when the crash struck on February 23.
He was driving a tournament-rented SUV when he launched a median strip at Rolling Hills Estates on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The SUV crossed two oncoming lanes and uprooted a tree downhill, police said it was known for its debris.
Athletes are recovering from multiple surgeries in Florida. Woods hasn’t spent a year without playing, dating back to his first PGA Tour event at the age of 16 in high school.
Four-time major golf champion Rory McIlroy, who lives near Woods, said he visited him on March 21st.
“I spent a few hours with him. It was good. It was nice to meet him,” McIlroy told the Masters on Tuesday. “I’m glad he met him in a decent spirit. When I heard these things, looked at the car and saw the crash, I think he’s been in the hospital bed for six months, but he’s actually It worked better than that. “
Villanueva faced criticism for weeks on his comment on the crash, calling it “purely an accident” and saying there was no evidence of impairment. According to the document, Woods told lawmakers he didn’t know how the crash happened and didn’t remember driving.
The detective searched for a data recorder for the 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV known as the Black Box. However, investigators did not seek a warrant for Woods’ blood samples that could be screened for drugs and alcohol.
In 2017, Woods checked in to the clinic to help handle prescription drugs after drunk driving in his home state of Florida.
