Emotions ignited at Paterson City Hall when residents appealed to marijuana retailers both for and against.
“We know it’s a gateway drug, we lost a lot of students, we have a lot of problems with our students in this situation,” said Patterson School Board. Corey Teague, a member of the board, said.
Congressman Patterson is considering plans to allow six marijuana retailers in the city.
The plan also allows Patterson to do 30 other cannabis-related businesses. The city could impose a 2% sales tax.
“I think there are a lot of pros. It’s a business that comes to Patterson. I think all the people in Patterson will benefit from it,” said Drew Willett of Rise Marijuana Dispenser.
According to the New Jersey Municipal Federation, an estimated one in four municipalities opt out of recreation licenses.
Due to the August 21 deadline to ban or limit the number of marijuana facilities, some lawmakers do not want to make a decision in a hurry and would like to wait a moment to confirm their approach.
“My concern is where it is. Where is the map and where is the zoning? All the laws and regulations that must be enforced to protect children are part of the debate. It needs to be considered. “
The next vote will take place on August 4th. If passed, it will be enacted after 45 days.
