Melbourne — Melbourne High School Softball Team Celebrated That state championship Victory in style on Thursday night: at a banquet at Grand Manor.
The team gathered with family and friends to celebrate Bulldog’s 1-0 victory over Doral Academy last weekend.
Their efforts this season were not only celebrated by friends and family at the banquet, but also recognized by Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey.
Alfrey presented coaches and players with a certificate congratulating them on returning the state’s softball championship to Melbourne.

Their way to the state championship game didn’t come without sacrifice. Their regional final against Bartow was originally scheduled for the same day as their graduation from Melbourne High School.
The game finally rained that Friday and moved on Saturday morning, but the team’s four seniors (Ally Turner, Kylah Berry, Sophia Valcourt, and Nevaeh Loveridge) graduated in front of family and classmates. I had the opportunity to receive a certificate. Play in the regional finals.
“The whole of our graduation was unforgettable,” Turner said. “We are very grateful that we were able to actually graduate from the class and win in a special way.”
Berry, Turner and Labridge received a diploma at the beginning of the graduation ceremony, and Valcourt chose to attend the graduation ceremony.
The fate was on Valcourt’s side as the game was postponed the next day.
“I was at risk of not going to the match to go to the graduation ceremony, but it rained on Friday and I had to play on Saturday, so it worked,” Barcourt said. “That made me really lucky.”
After graduating from Turner, Valcourt, Berry and Labridge, the Bulldog returns a few junior students.
Among them are Hailey Turner, who won the starting pitcher in the regional finals, the state semifinals and the state championship, catcher Alisha Thompson, and starting pitcher Jasmine Francik.
When asked if there was repeated pressure now that he had won, Francik took the following view.
Bulldog finished the championship season with a record of 26-2-1 and as one of the most successful softball teams in school history.
“The next day all my teammates were like awakening the state champion,” said Allie Turner. “I can’t say that every day, and we are very grateful for it.”
