New York (WABC) — One of the biggest lottery prizes in the country just got a little bigger as the Mega Millions jackpot increased to an estimated $1.1 billion.
The increase ahead of tonight’s draw makes the jackpot the third largest after the $1.5 billion won in 2018 and 2016.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot are a staggering 1 in 302.5 million.
Despite the fact that there were no top finishers on Tuesday, Four tri-state area players (two in New York and two in New Jersey) won the $1 million prize.
The Honey Bee Convenience Store on Forest Avenue in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island sold one winning $1,000,000 ticket. The second was sold at Cumberland Farms in Corinth, Saratoga County.
Two more $1 million winning tickets were sold in New Jersey.
One was sold at 7-Eleven on County Road in Tenafly. Another was sold at Circle K on Richmond Avenue in Point Pleasant.
A total of eight tickets went on sale nationwide ahead of Tuesday night’s drawing. The lottery saw him match five numbers, but none of the Mega numbers.
A ticket with five numbers but no mega number is worth $1 million or multiples of $1 million.
The Mega Millions record jackpot of $1.537 billion was won in South Carolina in October 2018.
The US record jackpot was $1.586 billion in the January 2016 Powerball lottery.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, as well as Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands. This game is overseen by state lottery authorities.
The $1.1 billion prize is for players who have won prizes through annual annuities over 29 years. Nearly all winners will choose an estimated $648.2 million cash option in Friday’s drawing.
