Addiction recovery expert explains why fentanyl overdoses have spiked recently

jacksonville, florida – Fentanyl has been implicated in two recent major drug busts in Duval and Flagler counties.

News4JAX spoke with Michael White, Executive Director of Teen Challenge. He is an addiction recovery ministry in Jacksonville.

White, a former addict who has been recovering for years, said the reason fentanyl’s soaring popularity among drug users was because of Florida’s pharmacy regulations.

“I used to have a lot of oxycodone and oxycontin, but now I hear a lot about heroin. Now it seems like a lot of those situations are going to fentanyl,” White said.

He added that many drug addicts believe the drug is cheaper and are testing how much they can tolerate, which can often lead to fatal overdoses. The Bureau of Enforcement wrote:

The drug has been at the center of the national immigration debate.

The DEA told News4JAX that most of the fentanyl comes from two Mexican drug cartels, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

On Tuesday, Governor Ron DeSantis addressed his decision to fly immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, specifically speaking out on the issue of fentanyl.

“This huge amount is pouring into the United States. I run into a mother and it’s so tragic because these kids aren’t making such terrible decisions. Maybe they did something wrong.” If you do, you’ll overdose because fentanyl is so deadly.

It was so in the story of St. Augustine News4JAX reported in early September.

Alexa McCondichie said her daughter Sarah Flinchbeau was just 29 when she died.

McCondichie wants to be clear that her daughter’s death was due to fentanyl poisoning, not an overdose.

“Our kids need to know about it. They can put fentanyl in any drug, even marijuana. They can put it in anything. It’s very deadly.” That’s what it is,” said McCondichie.
