A mother and daughter who escaped the war in Ukraine arrived in southwestern Florida. Two Ukrainian refugees are now being helped, thanks to local women and organizations.
A local group is helping people from Ukraine, and a woman from the organization, a United Ukrainian volunteer in Naples, welcomes her mother and daughter.
The mother and daughter woke up to the war three months ago and decided they had to go.
“As soon as I heard the news that residents came to people’s homes and shot them without asking questions, I knew I had to run away,” said Ukrainian refugee Hannah Stepanuk. ..
Getting to a safe place in southwestern Florida from Ukraine has never been so easy. Hannah Stepanuk and her daughter Victoria traveled many times by bus and train to see what no one needed to see.
“To me, this is like a nightmare I can’t wake up to. This was the best decision of the time and what I had to do. I wasn’t going to come to America Two months ago, I never imagined I was here. I felt I had to protect my daughter, “said Stepanuk.
The family lived just south of Kieu, the capital of Ukraine. The sounds of Russian bombs and sirens are still ringing in their hearts.
“When we were fleeing by train, there were more bombings along our way. It’s just a miracle that it didn’t hit us. Somehow, we did it. I missed it, “said Stepanuk.
Julia Gray felt she had to do something when she saw an image of a Ukrainian family escaping from her hometown.
“I’ve known them since I was a kid. They came from my hometown,” Gray said.
She is a member of United Ukrainian Volunteers, a Naples-based organization.
“I don’t know how long she will stay. I don’t know how long it will last. I don’t know if it’s going to be a year or if I have to stay here for the rest of my life. But I have a daughter. I know I’m doing my best to save, “Gray said.
Stepanuk said she had already lived her life and now wants to help her daughter do the same.
They want to return to Ukraine when the war is over. They say they want to return to free Ukraine.
