The sun sometimes emits flares. Flares are energy bursts of light and particles caused by the emission of magnetic energy into the sun as it travels across the solar system. X-rays emitted by the sun during intense flares can interfere with GPS, radio, and other communications signals when they reach Earth. MinXSS studies the energy of these flares at a wavelength called soft X-rays. This has a particular impact on the Earth’s ionosphere, the ionosphere of the atmosphere in which communication signals travel.
