NCAA Gymnastics Championship: Championship Field Survey

On Friday, April 16th, the Utah gymnastics team will move to the floor within the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, as one of eight teams eligible to compete in the 2021 National Championships.

Red Rocks will be where they belong. Utah has participated in 45 consecutive national championships, including the 39th berth of the NCAA Championship. It has a level of excellence comparable to other programs in the country.

Still, Utah hasn’t made it a recent practice to truly vie for national titles. Utah boasts 10 national championships, but has never won since 1995. In the last decade, Red Rocks was closest to winning in 2015, second overall. Since then, Utah has finished 9th, 5th, 5th and 7th.

Will 2021 finally be the year Red Rocks will break through again?

These are the seven teams that stand between Utah and the 11th National Championship (10th NCAA title).

  • Overall ranking is based on the latest Road to the people Ranking including scores in the region.
  • All event rankings and seeds are determined after the conference championship weekend and do not take into account regional performance.
  • Gymnasts earn national honors when they are in the top 16 of the final rankings for individual NQS events. The gymnasts of the first team were ranked from 1 to 8, and the gymnasts of the second team were ranked from 9 to 16.

  • Anastasia Webb — All-round, Beam and Vault’s first team All-American. The second team on the floor.
  • Evy Schoepfer — The first team’s All-American on the vault.
  • Audrey Davis — The first team’s All-American at the bar.
  • Karrie Thomas — Second Team All-American Beam.
  • Catherine Levasour — Second Team All-American at the Bar.

latest

Sooners was the best team in the country in the region. Oklahoma easily defeated Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri in the final to win the Tuscaloosa region. The Snurs haven’t fallen below 197 since January 31st, and have scored more than 198 three times this year. With the exception of the shocking defeat to Denver in the Big 12 Championship, the Snurs have defeated all the opponents they faced this season.

history

Utah and Oklahoma have 39 meetings, with the latest meeting in Norman earlier this season. The Snurs won the tournament and doubled as the worst tournament of the Utah season. Oklahoma has defeated Utah six times in a row, defeating 10 of the last 12 times.

challenging

Oklahoma has been the best team in the country for most of the last decade. Utah will face Oklahoma in the national semifinals — LSU and Alabama are the other two teams in the evening semifinals — and the victory over Sooners boosts great confidence, except for this postseason in Red Rock. Win the national title itself, which will be the highest task.

Michigan Wolverines

seed: Four

Rank: 2

Postseason NQS: 395.900

Record: 20-2

  • Sierra Brooks — All-American of the first team on the vault. All-round second team.
  • Abby Heiskell — All-American of the first team on the vault.
  • Naomi Morrison — Vault 2nd Team All-American.

latest

Michigan has acquired the Morgantown region, which many consider to be the most difficult region in the country. Wolverines finished ahead of Cal, UCLA and Ohio, thanks to a third score of over 198 this year and a program record of 49.725 at the bar. Michigan has lost only twice this season. Lost to Minnesota in the Big Ten Championship and to Iowa in the Big Five.

history

Michigan and Utah have met 44 times, with Red Rocks leading 29-15. Utah has won six of the last ten conferences between programs, while Wolverines outperformed the Red Rocks in their latest match in the 2019 national semifinals.

challenging

When on, Michigan was arguably the best team in the country this season. Wolverine is not always at its best, but it has proven to be vulnerable otherwise. Utah should not be afraid of Michigan (too much history between teams) and will not face Wolverine until the national championship itself.

Florida Gators

seed: 1

Rank: 3

Postseason NQS: 395.644

  • Megan Scaggs — All-round and second team All-American at the bar.
  • Nya Reed — The second team on the floor is All-American.
  • Savannah Schoenherr — Second team all-American on a vault.

latest

For most of the season, Florida was a favorite to win national titles. The Gators defeated Minnesota, Denver, and North Carolina to do what they needed to do in the Athens region. The only defeat in Florida this season was the same tournament, the SEC Championship. The Gators ended behind both Alabama and LSU. Otherwise, Florida dominated the competition, surpassing 198 twice.

history

Utah leads the greatest series ever in Florida 39-19-1, but most of these victories occurred in the late 1980s and early 90s. Since 1995, Florida has defeated Utah 19 times and Red Rocks has defeated the Gators 15 times. Utah hasn’t beat Florida since 2013 and the team hasn’t met since 2018.

challenging

When healthy, the Gators were invincible this season. Injuries played an important role in Florida’s third place finish in the SEC Championship. Utah will not face Florida until the National Championships are held, but the Gator’s Stand has one of the most important obstacles Utah must overcome to win the title.

LSU Tigers

seed: 3

Rank: Four

Postseason NQS: 395.563

Regional high score: 197.750

Record: 15-6

Event ranking

  • Balance beam — 7
  • Floor exercise — 2
  • Uneven bars — 6
  • Vault — 2

Well-known gymnast

  • Haleigh Bryant — The first team of all-Americans on the vault and floor. All-round second team.
  • Sami Durante-The second team’s All-American at the bar.
  • Car Johnson — The first team on the floor, All American. The second team in the vault.
  • Alyona Shchennikova — All-American of the second team on the vault.

latest

The Tigers finished second in the Salt Lake City Regional, behind Utah and in front of Arizona and Kentucky. LSU actually finished second in both regional competitions and lost to Kentucky in the regional semi-finals. The Tigers have been hit or missed from time to time this season. When on, they put Florida at stake and treated almost everyone the SEC had to offer. When off, they fell into Kentucky many times.

history

Utah holds an overwhelming 33-7 advantage in the series with LSU, but the Tigers have been a better team since 2017, winning all five matches between programs, up to this year’s regional. Did. Utah’s victory was the first victory over LSU since 2012.

challenging

Utah, who has already won in the face of LSU, knows exactly what the Tigers have to offer. At best, LSU can be a problem for any team. However, as Utah has already shown, the Tigers have weaknesses and can be defeated.

University of California, Berkeley

seed: Five

Rank: 6

Postseason NQS: 395.363

Regional high score: 197.750

Record: 19-3

Event ranking

  • Balance beam-9
  • Floor exercise — 6
  • Uneven bars — 1
  • Vault — 9

Well-known gymnast

  • Nevaeh DeSouza — All-round second team All-American.
  • Nina Schank — Second team all-American at the bar.
  • Andi Li — Second team all-American at the bar.
  • Kayana George — Floor Second Team All American.

latest

California finished second in Morgantown Regional, ahead of UCLA and Ohio, after Michigan. The Bears were one of the hottest teams at the end of the season and had the only setback in the Pac-12 Championship in the Utah and Michigan regions. Otherwise, Cal defeated all participants and set new program records in the process.

history

Cal and Utah have met 30 times in a Red Rocks-dominated series. Utah has won 28 matches at their home in Salt Lake City at the Pac-12 Championship, including two this year. Bears finally defeated Utah in 2018.

challenging

Utah knows how to defeat Cal. Even if the Bears become the second best team on the Pac-12, it’s been proven this season. Cal has the best bar lineup in the country and is a rotation that contributed to their success, but when the team faces the finals, Red Rocks will be a favorite.

Alabama Crimson Tide

seed: 7

Rank: 7

Postseason NQS: 395.113

Regional high score: 197.575

Record: 19-3

Event ranking

  • Balance beam — 6
  • Floor exercise — 13
  • Uneven bars — 8
  • Vault — 5

Well-known gymnast

  • Luisa Blanco — All-round, all-American for Beam and Bar’s first team. The second team in the vault.
  • Lexi Graber — All-American for the first team on the floor.
  • Makarri Doggette — Second team all-American at the bar.

latest

Alabama finished second in the Tuscaloosa Regional after Oklahoma and survived the country’s most difficult semi-finals, where Crimson Tide played against Iowa, Iowa and Arkansas. In the postseason, there may not have been a team higher than Alabama. Crimson Tide won the SEC Championship and defeated LSU and Florida.

history

The history between Alabama and Utah is long and is mainly included in the postseason. Utah has followed the trails in previous series 20-30 and has only defeated Crimson Tide in four of the last 15 matches. That said, the team hasn’t faced it since 2017 and won the Utah tournament.

challenging

Alabama is talented. Both Blanco and Doggett scored the perfect 10 points in the Tuscaloosa Regional. This is why Crimson Tide caused confusion between Florida and LSU. Of course, Alabama also shows that it is vulnerable to a loss in Georgia. Utah and Alabama will meet in the National Semifinals. With the introduction of LSU, only one of the three teams can advance to the national title tournament, except for the collapse caused by Oklahoma.

Minnesota Golden Gophers

seed: 8

Rank: 8

Postseason NQS: 394.856

Regional high score: 197.425

Record: 22-4

Event ranking

  • Balance beam — 5
  • Floor exercise — 10
  • Uneven bars — 7
  • Vault — 6

Well-known gymnast

  • Lexy Ramler — All-American for the first team in all-round, bar, beam and vault.
  • Ona Loper — The first team on the vault, All-American. The second team on the floor all round.
  • Mya Hooten — All-American for the first team on the floor.
  • Mary Korlin-Downs — Second Team All-American Beam.
  • Maddie Quarles — Second team all-American on the vault.

latest

Minnesota is in the midst of one of the best seasons of the program in recent memory, if not always. The Golden Gophers upset Michigan to win the Big Ten Championship and then finished second in the Athens Regional after Florida. Minnesota had nothing to do with inconsistencies this season, and won over 197.400 in four of the last seven tournaments.

history

Utah has dealt with Minnesota for many years, winning 31 of the 32 tournaments. The team’s final meeting was in 2019 at the Baton Rouge Regional, where Red Rocks was in charge of two businesses with the Golden Gophers. The team was supposed to meet during the season, but COVID-19 canceled the match. Minnesota’s one victory over Utah is back in 2000.

challenging

Minnesota hasn’t shown that it can hit the same highs for many nationally qualified teams, but nevertheless, the Golden Gophers have some of the best gymnasts in the country like Ramler. Proud and proven to take advantage of opponents’ mistakes. Utah and Minnesota wouldn’t meet until the country title met, and Golden Gopher would have had to stop serious upset to get there.
