“Tiana’s Bayou Adventure,” inspired by Disney’s beloved film “The Princess and the Frog,” is set to enchant guests when it opens this Friday at the Magic Kingdom Park.
Previously known as Splash Mountain, this reimagined attraction offers a vibrant celebration of Mardi Gras, paying homage to Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana. The transformation was led by Disney Imagineers, who have crafted an immersive experience that reflects the rich culture and charm of New Orleans, Tiana’s beloved hometown.
Charita Carter, Executive Creative Producer of Walt Disney Imagineering, expressed the significance of this update, emphasizing the inclusion of Princess Tiana as a pivotal moment in Disney’s history. “The significance of bringing Princess Tiana, an American princess, an African American princess to the parks is really, really quite tremendous,” Carter remarked. “And to think that I’ve had a part of that, and our team has had a part of that is really special.”
The decision to retheme the attraction stemmed from the original Splash Mountain’s association with the controversial film “Song of the South,” known for its portrayal of racial stereotypes. By transforming the ride into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Disney not only provides a new, culturally rich experience but also ensures that Princess Tiana has a permanent presence at both Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland Park in California.
Guests can anticipate encountering a plethora of audio-animatronics, newly composed music, and the exhilarating 50-foot drop that has been a hallmark of the attraction. Following its closure in January 2023 for refurbishments, “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” promises to deliver an unforgettable journey through the enchanting world of Princess Tiana and her friends.
This reimagining marks a significant step in Disney’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, offering a fresh and inclusive narrative that celebrates Princess Tiana’s cultural heritage and the magic of New Orleans.
