Pressure to push vendors off sidewalks with flushing

Flushing, Queens (WABC) — Vendors on Main Street in downtown Flushing sell clothing, food and household items. They have crates of goods and occupy a lot of sidewalk real estate. Not a single vendor is allowed there. In 2018 a no-sell zone was declared.

“No vending zone means that even licensed vendors aren’t allowed to sell,” said NYC Council member Sandra Ng.

However, it does not appear to be compulsory.

Ung, who grew up in the neighborhood, has launched a petition for no new rules.

“What I want is enforcement to keep the streets clean,” Ng said.

The Neighborhood Business Improvement District supports her petition. Stores also flood the sidewalks as they compete in busy transportation hubs.

“I don’t think people without a license should work here, people with a license should work here,” said vendor Steve Walters.

Walters is one of the few licensed vendors. When you become a veteran like him, your chances of getting a license are a little less. He wants the NYPD to be the primary law enforcement agency, not the Consumer and Labor Protection Agency.

Eyewitness News tried to talk to other vendors, but none were comfortable speaking in front of the camera.

“They didn’t kill or hurt anyone,” said one supporter.

Ung also says he’s not against the concept of vending, saying any coercion must be treated kindly. Vendor immigration status should not be an issue. Nor should you lose your items.

“Forfeiture means the item is vouchered,” Ung said.

Ung says vendors should be well warned.

“Downtown Flushing can’t sell more vending machines,” she added.

The city has granted council members’ petitions to strengthen enforcement.

The mayor’s office told Eyewitness News the city is undertaking several reform efforts and hopes to adopt thoughtful rules that balance the needs of all stakeholders, including residents, businesses and vendors. I’m here.

However, I’m not sure if additional actions are planned here anytime soon.
