In a statement, the ministry said Boonton’s Lucas Homeijer, 27, had died on Tuesday. He has been hospitalized in crisis since the incident at the State Police Academy in Siegart, Monmouth County.
On November 25, when the homemaker lost consciousness, members of the 161st Academy class “played an aggressive countermeasure / boxing match with their classmates,” according to state police.
“Academy staff immediately stopped exercising, provided first aid, and contacted emergency medical services to respond,” state police said.
The recruit was taken to the hospital.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Governor Phil Murphy said he spoke to Homeijer’s mother earlier that morning and left a message for his father.
Deeply saddened by the tragic passage of @NJSP At just 27 years old, we are looking for Lucas Homeijer to be a member of the 161st State Police Academy class. Condolences to Recruit Homemaker’s family and friends, as well as his academy classmates.

Colonel Pat Callahan of the New Jersey State Police said he grew up in a New Jersey State Police family at the age of 27. Both his father and uncle are retired soldiers.
“One of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to personally experience as a trooper and as a dad,” Callahan said.
Callahan said each instructor treats new employees like their own children, despite rigorous training.
“Although Luke was short, he lived a life of service,” Callahan said.
Homeijer is an Eagle Scout and participated in Trooper Youth Week at the age of 17.
“There is no doubt that Luke Homeijer has created an amazing jersey soldier,” Callahan said.
Callahan said his 161st Academy classmates were devastated and would continue training “with Luke in mind.”
Callahan and Murphy sent their prayers to Homeijer’s family and his classmates.
A thorough review is underway, Callahan said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
