Greensboro, North Carolina – Liner Perez hit a jumper near her left elbow with 2.1 seconds remaining to help defeat North Carolina’s third-placed Louisville 58-56 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship game on Sunday. ..
Perez’s shot defeated the Thai game with a tense finish between the two top teams in the country, neither leading more than one point in the last four minutes. And it secured the first consecutive title of Wolfpack in the history of the program.
In the winning play, Perez first began to pass to teammate Elissa Kneen, who was rolling in the lane, but had to pull the ball back when the pass wasn’t there. Instead, she gathered her legs, shook off six straight mistakes dating back to the second quarter, and filled the jumper in the second seeded Wolfpack (20-2).
Topseed Cardinal (23-3) had the last chance to inbound the ball under his basket with one second left and win it. However, Dana Evans missed three offs from Kiana Smith’s inbound pass with a horn and celebrated Wolfpack players by spilling them on the center court.
Elissa Kneen led the Wolfpack with 20 points and won the tournament MVP honor.
