NYC has renamed 16 parks to honor the African-American experience

New York City (WABC)-Authorities have announced that they will rename 16 parks throughout New York City in honor of the experience of black Americans in New York City.

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver has joined New York State Senator Jose Serrano, New York State Assembly Amanda Septimo, New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson, and Helendian Foster, the daughter of former City Council member and late Rev. Wendell Foster. By announcing on Wednesday.

The newly named space represents educators, civil rights leaders, LGBTQ + community pioneers, entertainers, novelists, playwrights, abolitionists and more.

The park spans five wards and includes:

Brooklyn
Prospect Park Band Shell Renamed to Lena Horne Band Shell

Manhattan
Hell’s Kitchen Park renamed Lorraine Hansbury Park

Queens
St Albans Oval has been renamed Musician Oval in honor of black jazz celebrities such as Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie.

Staten Island
Silver Lake Park will be home to the Audral Lourdes Walk

Bronx
Larry Park renamed Pastor Wendell T. Foster Park & ​​Recreation Center
