There are hundreds of millions of companies around the world, but relatively few are as influential and respected as Patagonia, the most well-known outdoor clothing retailer. There is a panther who is in control now.
Less than a year after Ryan Gellert ’96 MBA, JD became CEO of Patagonia Works, a holding company consisting of apparel company Patagonia Inc., food company Patagonia Provisions and multimedia company Patagonia Media, but already he quietly and effectively around the world. We are igniting positive changes. While these industries may seem diverse, Gellert sees them as a tool to violate Patagonia’s mission statement.
Through the example of the Patagonia clause, he explains: We entered the food business because we seriously believe that the most broken supply chain in the world is the food supply chain. ”
Gellert sees this issue as an opportunity to be a thing of the past. If his company can solve this supply chain problem, or at least improve it, it will be able to solve the climate / ecosystem crisis through the practice of renewable organic farming. And finding a solution to that crisis is Patagonia’s main mission, “Saving our home planet.”
“We are investing heavily in making great clothing with the smallest footprint possible for our purposes, but in reality we are more clothing than the big idea of impersonating a clothing company. It’s not a goods company, “says Gellert. “We’re just trying to push big ideas. Food has to fit it, the media has to fit it, and everything that comes next has to fit it.”
Gellert is not obliged to lightly continue its 48-year history and commitment to responsibility, and has begun to move steadily in the last few months with some bold moves. He is not surprised that the company’s position is not widely accepted.
“We are working on a 100-year-old pandemic and, among other topics, challenges and opportunities, a very important moment that considers racial injustice,” he says. “When you take these positions, it offends people. We live in a healthier part-time job society than ever before, and instead of actively participating in more active and subtle conversations. We’re just talking beyond each other. We just want people to participate in honest dialogue. ”
His advice to other business leaders: Surrounded by the best people you can, trust them, inspire them, and what’s most important to you: the employees you exist to serve And put your finger on the pulsation of the community.
“Often it’s” going along your instincts, “and we’re always thinking about the following, moving this forward and relentlessly working on setting the tempo. ”
An apology-free love for a complex and engaging business has led Gellert to today’s place.
“I love the fact that businesses come with scorecards. The capitalist system doesn’t care if you live or die, so you have to show up to the world every day to prove your whereabouts. Hmm. Otherwise, it slips and disappears. It’s very mission-driven, but this combination of doing it from a business branch is personally a sweet spot. ”
