The city of Patterson declared December 1st “Rosa Parks Day” 66 years after refusing to give up its seat to whites on a racist southern city bus.
School director Irene Schaefer and Mayor Patterson Andre Sayegh attended the celebration with leaders from other local communities.
“Rosa Parks was really a historical figure and inspired a lot of people,” Saiyegh said. “I am proud to join Schaefer in declaring December 1st as Rosa Parks Day in Patterson.”
The ceremony took place outside a high school named after the symbol of civil rights.
Rosa Parks Art School students attended a ceremony that included a live performance.
