Patterson declares “Rosa Parks Day” December 1st in honor of the civil rights icon

Paterson, NJ (WABC)-Cities in New Jersey celebrated the symbol of civil rights on the anniversary of their brave position against racial injustice.

The city of Patterson declared December 1st “Rosa Parks Day” 66 years after refusing to give up its seat to whites on a racist southern city bus.

School director Irene Schaefer and Mayor Patterson Andre Sayegh attended the celebration with leaders from other local communities.

“Rosa Parks was really a historical figure and inspired a lot of people,” Saiyegh said. “I am proud to join Schaefer in declaring December 1st as Rosa Parks Day in Patterson.”

The ceremony took place outside a high school named after the symbol of civil rights.

Rosa Parks Art School students attended a ceremony that included a live performance.
