Pelosi Nominates Chainy for Panel Investigating January 6 Riot – NBC4 Washington

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi appointed Republican Liz Cheney and seven Democrats to a new special committee on Thursday to investigate the violent riots in the Capitol on January 6.

Congressman Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, will lead the panel. What went wrong around the Capitol when hundreds of supporters of then-President Donald Trump broke into the building, sought parliamentarians, and suspended parliamentary certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory. “I’m honored to be a member of the Commission,” Republican Cheney said in a statement, “Parliament has conducted a full investigation of the most serious attacks on our Capitol since 1814. I have a duty to do it. ”

The House of Representatives approved the panel on Wednesday over Republican opposition. Chainy, who was removed from GOP leadership this year for criticism of Trump, was one of two Republicans who supported the formation of the committee.

D-California Pelosi formed a committee after Senate Republicans blocked an independent bipartisan investigation.

In addition to Thompson and D-Miss, other Democrats on the panel include Jamie Raskin of Maryland, Zoe Lofgren of California, Elaine Luria of Virginia, Stephanie Murphy of Florida, and Texas. This is Pete Aguilar.

House minority leader Kevin McCarthy threatened to deprive the Republican Commission of its duties if it accepted the appointment of the Republican Party from Pelosi, a top Republican aide in the House of Representatives said Thursday.

Republican McCarthy’s warning underscores the leader’s opposition to the Commission and their desire to shape the story of the Commission’s activities as much as possible. Republicans have complained that the panel will be dominated by Democrats and produce distorted party reports, even if the GOP has previously abandoned previous Democratic attempts to form bipartisan committees.

McCarthy said at a private meeting of the first members of the House Republican Party on Wednesday that he was managing the mission of a Republican committee rather than Pelosi. He told them that if Pelosi nominates them to a committee and they accept, they should plan to get all committee duties from her — they are now. An obvious threat to remove from the panel.

The aide explained the private meeting on condition of anonymity. The McCarthy threat was first reported by the political news organization Punch Bowl News.

Pelosi had the authority to appoint at least eight of the chairman and 13 members. The resolution also gives her a statement that may instruct her to name her “after consultation” with McCarthy, even in the appointment of the other five members.

Another Trump critic, Illinois Rep. Chainy and Adam Kinzinger, were the only Republicans to vote in favor of establishing a new commission.

Republican leaders haven’t even said whether Republicans will join the new panel.
