Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin signaled on Thursday that he would support depriving the commander of the power to decide whether a unit accused of sexual assault would be prosecuted. NBC News reported.
The shift to putting such decisions in the hands of independent legal authority will revolutionize the way the military handles sexual assault cases.
According to defense officials, Austin will make recommendations to President Joe Biden within a few weeks.
“As I said earlier, what we’re doing isn’t working and needs to be fixed,” Austin said in a Senate Military Commission testimony.
