Glynn County evacuees return home after seeking shelter during heavy fire

Brunswick, Georgia – A family in Brunswick, Georgia, is returning home Sunday morning after two major fires at a Pinova factory on Saturday.

Crew members worked all night to extinguish the reignited flames that triggered the shelter-in-place and evacuation orders.Officials said the fire was under control and was officially extinguished around 10 p.m.

Kimry Parrish was one of the residents who complied with the evacuation because she lives near the nuclear power plant.

“You don’t take a chance on fire,” Parrish said.

Parrish said the whole experience was devastating because the residents “never felt frightened by that plant”.

She said she decided to leave because she was afraid the fire would cause an explosion and because of the large amount of smoke in the air she could not breathe.

“I had to wear a mask because of the chemicals from the fire. It wasn’t good for me,” Parrish said.

The fire department is still on site, directing water into the factory to prevent another fire.

When the fires reignited, Brunswick’s Mayor Johnson called for voluntary evacuation and issued a shelter-in-place order for the entire town. He also said the Red Cross has set up shelters in Howard Coffin Park for evacuees.

Parrish chose to stay across town with his grandchildren, but 29 Glynn County residents signed up for the shelter and 16 stayed overnight, according to the southeastern Georgia Red Cross executive director. stayed.

The Salvation Army provided a hot breakfast with snacks and drinks. The Red Cross also provided guests with pizza and snacks.

Other residents told News4JAX they wished city officials had called for evacuations earlier in the day.

Now they said they don’t feel safe living in their neighborhood.

Parrish said before the fire, she was thinking of moving someone else. Now she said it would definitely happen.
