Miami Dolphins News: Disaster Averted vs. Jets, Waddle & Lindsay Set To Return, Fuller Injury Update

Dolphins Avoid Scare vs. Jets, Win Sixth Straight

It was tougher than it should have been, but the Miami Dolphins narrowly got past the struggling New York Jets at home on Sunday afternoon for their sixth consecutive victory.

Miami turned the ball over three times in the ultra-sloppy victory. The red-hot Tua Tagovailoa threw two interceptions — including a 20-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter — that allowed New York to stay in the game.

Though rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was sacked six times, the Jets moved the ball efficiently through the ground game. They rushed for 102 yards on 24 carries, including two touchdowns.

Fortunately for Tagovailoa, Miami’s long-struggling rushing game pulled through during his frustrating day. The Dolphins rushed for 183 yards on 42 carries. Duke Johnson led the way with 22 carries for 107 yards and two scores.

The Dolphins completed the season series sweep of the Jets for the second consecutive year. Miami has now won five consecutive meetings against the longtime rivals.

With the victory, Miami moves back to the .500 mark following a nightmare 1-7 start. They remain alive and well in the wide-open race for the AFC’s three wild card spots, but there’s still plenty of work to do.

The Dolphins realistically have to win out to have a chance at ending a five-year playoff drought. They’ll visit the New Orleans Saints — coming off an impressive 9-0 shutout victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers —  on Monday Night Football next week (8:15 p.m. EST).

After that, Miami will visit the AFC South-leading Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon in Week 17. They’ll conclude the regular season with a home tilt against another division leader, the AFC East rival New England Patriots on Jan. 9.

The Dolphins have opened as a slight three-point underdog for their Week 16 showdown with the Saints. Fanduel sportsbook is currently offering new players up to $1,000 in risk-free bets for the recent launch in NY, so it may be worth taking a look at it.

Jaylen Waddle & Phillip Lindsay Coming Off COVID-19/Reserve List

The surging Dolphins are about to receive some much-needed reinforcements.

Per NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, rookie wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and veteran running back Phillip Lindsay are being taken off the COVID-19/reserve list.

Waddle was added to the list last week. Lindsay was dealing with an ankle injury before testing positive for COVID-19, making him eligible as well for the game against the Jets.

The 23-year-old Waddle was drafted sixth overall by the Dolphins. He leads the team in receptions (86) and receiving yards (849). Waddle is tied with Myles Gaskin and Mack Hollins for the team lead in touchdown receptions with four.

Lindsay started the season with the Houston Texans. He was eventually placed on waivers and claimed by the Dolphins on Nov. 24.

A two-time 1,000-yard rusher with the Denver Broncos, Lindsay struggled to regain his Pro Bowl-like form in Houston. He had just 130 rushing yards (50 carries) and a touchdown in 10 game appearances.

Lindsay has played one game for Miami so far. He had 42 rushing yards on 12 carries in the team’s 33-10 victory in Week 12 over Carolina Panthers.

Will Fuller Likely Done For Season

Per Wolfe, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said Monday that veteran wideout Will Fuller is likely out for the remainder of the season as he continues to recover from a broken finger.

Fuller suffered the injury in the team’s Week 4 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Per Wolfe, Flores announced that Fuller has endured setbacks with the finger.

Fuller has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career. He has missed at least five games in five of his six NFL seasons, never suiting up for more than 14.

Miami signed the speedy wideout and former Houston first-round pick to a one-year deal in free agency. The hope was that Fuller, Waddle and veteran standout DeVante Parker would form a dynamic trio at wideout and help accelerate the growth of Tagovailoa.

But injuries prevented the 27-year-old Fuller from finding his game in Miami. He finishes the season with just four catches in two game appearances for 26 yards and no touchdowns.

The Dolphins will most likely let Fuller, who posted a career-high 879 receiving yards for Houston last year, walk in free agency. But with Parker and Waddle in the fold, Tagovailoa won’t be short on weapons over the long run.
