Police shooting in Newark injured a suspected car theft and arrested another

Newark, NJ (WABC)-One person was shot dead and injured in Newark on Tuesday morning by police officers.

It happened around 8am on Lions Avenue.

Apparently, the car was stolen from Asbury Park by Seven-Eleven on Monday.

Then someone called the police and said the car was in the backyard.

When Newark police arrived at the scene, they found a car with a person inside.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was reportedly trying to use the car as a weapon when police officers approached the car.

The policeman responded by firing at the vehicle. A man in the car was injured in multiple shootings.

He was taken to a university hospital in an unknown state.

A second man, also in the car, was detained.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
