Researchers devise progenitor cells of sex cells while maintaining power

Human primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the early progenitor cells of eggs (oocytes) and sperms needed to maintain human survival and reproduction. Medical researchers are using models of these cells, called human primordial germ cell-like cells (PGCLCs), to study their function and development.


Human PGCLC has been developed at several research centers, including the Cancer Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a laboratory led by Satoshi Shioda (MD, Ph.D.) at Harvard Medical School.

Natural PGCs are only present in embryos. The model was created to overcome the ethical and technical barriers surrounding the use of human embryonic tissue in experiments.
