Second Officer in Parliament Riot dies from suicide, police chief says – NBC4 Washington

This week, the Deputy Metropolitan Police Department said a second police officer who defended the US Capitol committed suicide in a mob attack on January 6.

Chief Robert J. Conti III told the House of Representatives Tuesday that a 12-year veteran of the Metro Police Department, Jeffrey Smith, had recently committed suicide. Another officer, Howard Levengood, who joined the Houses of Parliament police in 2005, committed suicide three days after the attack. Leven Good was 51 years old.

“Other harm from this traumatic day will be widespread, but probably unrecognized,” Conty said. “Law enforcement training does not anticipate or prepare for hours of hand-to-hand combat.”

Smith’s family was not immediately asked to comment. Levengood’s family declined the request for an interview by a lawyer.
