Seeking more affordable housing in Collier County

Finding affordable homes in Collier County is becoming increasingly difficult. According to QuoteWizard.com, rents there increased 49% in 2021 and prices continue to rise.

Collier County leaders will meet on Monday at 8:30 am to discuss what can be done to build cheaper homes before making recommendations to the County Commission. But people living in Collier County say they had to deal with the rising costs already.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development defines “cost burden” as “more than 30% of income spent on housing.” Many people find themselves at a cost in Collier County, where 61% of their work pays less than $ 34,000.

Jim Baumhart and Olivia De Angelis are two residents who agree on one thing. Collier County leaders need to do something. They both know people who have left the county or are considering leaving the county because of the high cost of living, and Baumhart says he may move soon for the same reason.

“That is, paying a fairly standard two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, like $ 3,300 a month, is a bit ridiculous,” says Baumhart.

“Financially, I can’t live on my own because there aren’t any affordable ones here in Collier County,” said De Angelis.

Baumhart said he recently received a notification that rents would rise by 35% within the next 60 days.

He taught me one of the things that county leaders should do. It’s about limiting how much you can raise someone’s rent.

“But the lack of provisions is scary. There are no sanctions in the county that allow landlords of these apartments to do what they want to do without protecting the masses.”

“What about the people who live here forever?” De Angelis said. “What about the middle class people you know?”

WINK News told community members that they believe that living costs in Collier County continue to increase due to the number of people moving from other areas to the county.
