Madrid — Colombian pop singer Shakira chose to go to trial instead of accepting a deal offered by Spanish prosecutors to settle claims that she defrauded the Spanish government of €14.5 million ($15 million) in taxes. did, her public relations team said Wednesday.
Shakira, 45, “has chosen to trust her innocence and leave this matter in the hands of the law,” PR firm Llorente y Cuenca said in a statement.
Spanish prosecutors indicted the singer in 2018 for failing to pay €14.5 million in taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014.
There were no immediate details available about the deal prosecutor provided. No trial date has been set.
Shakira’s public relations firm said Shakira has deposited the amount she is said to be owed to the Spanish National Tax Agency and has no pending tax liabilities.
The case hinges on where she lived between 2012 and 2014. Prosecutors claim that even though Shakira’s official residence was in the Bahamas, it was mostly in Spain.
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has two children with Barcelona football star Gerard Pique. The couple used to live together in Barcelona, but recently ended their 11-year relationship.
