Sharks found off Rockaway in Queens, Lido Beach urged closure of Long Island and City Beach

Rockaways, Queens (WABC)-Beach goers saw another shark this weekend, but this time it was within the city.

The NYC Parks division confirmed that sharks were witnessed at Rockaway Beach in Queens on Sunday afternoon.

“I want them to have a lookout,” said Janice Duffin. “They are looking for it. Get the drone out. Get people out of the water in time.”

The beach east of Rockaways is closed from Beach 9 to Beach 29.

Around the same time, sharks were found off the coast of Lido Beach in Hempstead, Long Island.

According to Hempstead town director Don Krabin, lifeguard Frank Falcone was investigating the water when other lifeguards found fins about 25-30 yards offshore.

The lifeguard blew the whistle and quietly returned all swimmers to the beach. The closest swimmer was about 20 yards from where the lifeguard saw the fins.

Sharks were believed to be 5 to 7 feet long.

Long Beach was notified of sightings and temporarily closed the beach.

Lido Beach swimmers were able to return to knee-deep water around 1:30 pm.

After 2:00 pm, there was no other sighting information and swimmers were allowed to go further out by 2:30 pm.

Supervisor Krabin said the town of Hempstead has witnessed more sharks than more than a decade in the last two years.

Supervisors said lifeguards were trained in distinguishing between CPR and sharks, while the town of Hempstead also installed shark patrol jet skis to monitor water bodies.
