Drivers cross the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge daily as they travel between Pinellas and Manatees counties.
But today, as we go through the striking structure, we remember its dark history.
On May 9, 1980, a tragedy struck. A cargo ship collided with a stanchion and the 1,200-foot bridge collapsed. That day, 35 people died.
A monument was created in St. Petersburg in honor of the victims.
A new bridge, 430 feet above Tampa Bay, opened in 1987.
The remains of the old bridge can still be seen on the current fishing pier.
A documentary on bridge disasters in 2019 has been created Amazon.
