Our photographer, Mike Thorne, caught an owl sitting on a reservoir North Pumphouse, which seems to be one of his favorite spots.
“This is an amazing event, and it’s incredible,” said David Barrett of Manhattan Bird Alert earlier this week.
For Barrett, finding a snowy owl is like being hit by two lightning strikes.
He is the best bird nerd in the city. It’s a compliment.
You will find it difficult to find a bigger expert about our feathered friends.
“It was unusual for a snowy owl to arrive at Central Park in the first place,” Barrett said.
He is talking about a snowy owl found in Central Park last week.
Prior to that, it was last seen in the park in 1890.
However, around 6 pm Wednesday night, it was rediscovered flying east from the northeastern pumphouse over the reservoir.
“It’s as rare as possible. People haven’t seen them in Central Park in their lifetime,” Barrett said. “It looks like the same owl. It has a lot of bans on it, so it probably shows a young female snowy owl.”
Snowy owls come from the Arctic Circle and travel south in winter, usually to the coastline.
It’s a gorgeous bird and seeing it in Central Park for birdwatchers is like winning a lottery.
So why come here?
Of course, dining outdoors. The park has a full menu.

“I might go to rodents tonight. I might stay here and try to hunt waterfowl. I have a choice,” Barrett said. “They eat a great variety. Whatever they can catch. They can certainly catch ducks.”
So, on Wednesday night, Barrett was trying to capture an image of him hunting in the park.
An image I’ve never seen before. An image as rare as a snowy owl can be seen in a park.
