A vibrant technical college will host the first dual registration signing day.

Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL) — Basem and Mohammad Maswadeh are father and son, but they are both bosses and employees.

“He’s got an opportunity. It’s just a step in the right direction,” Barsem said.

Mohammad is a sophomore at Leon County Virtual School and is dual enrolled in Lively Technical College’s automotive program so he can work full-time in his father’s business after graduation.

“I could help my father, I could do business with him, I could have success with him and I couldn’t ask for more,” Mohammad explained.

The Maswadehs attended the first signing ceremony for Lively Technical College students and employers. Basem said the opportunity will help his son live a better life.

“He doesn’t have to work until he’s 50 or 40. He’s ahead of his game,” Barsem said. “If he keeps his head straight and keeps his dreams and goals in education, he’ll be ready, have the rest of the income and don’t have to work as hard as I do. ”

Chelsea Williams, career and technical education coordinator for K through 12 at Leon County Schools, said the company’s dual enrollment program will help the trade industry fill vacancies.

“Many of them have apprenticeships and internships with them, so this is a great talent pool for employers and people in our community to draw on for their pipeline,” Williams explained.

Leon County Schools covers the cost of the dual enrollment program. Williams says a free education is invaluable to students.

“We remind these young men and young women that whether they use them in their careers or not, these skills can be acquired and they can become lifelong learners, but these are skills that they can always maintain. I teach,” Williams said.

Mohammad’s advice to anyone considering dual enrollment is to take advantage of the golden opportunity.

“Having a vocational school or a vocational skill can be very useful in the future, so you can learn it and keep it,” Mohammad said.
