Some of the Best Sports Films of All Time

Sports films are a huge genre of cinema. Many of the best and most beloved films of all time have fallen in this genre. But what are some of the best of the best? In this article, we are going to take a look at just a few of the best sports films of all time.

The Karate Kid

In 1984, Karate Kid first hit the cinema, and became an instant classic, winning the hearts and minds of the American (and worldwide) audience. Often accredited with popularizing the sport in the United States, the Karate Kid tells the story of Daniel Russo, a teenager who has recently moved into a new neighborhood. Having a hard time fitting in, Daniel takes up karate, and is thought the sport by Mister Miyagi (played by Pat Morita). Miyagi’s unorthodox method of teaching leads to Daniel winning the local karate tournament and earning the respect of his peers.

One of the most popular films of all time, Rocky is the timeless story of an underdog going up against impossible odds. It is no surprise that Rocky is one of the most popular sports films, considering the popularity of boxing in the world. On betting sites like,  boxing is one of the most popular sports to stream and bet on, and as far as combat sports are concerned, boxing dominates the scene.

Rocky is the film that made Stallone a household name, and earned him worldwide popularity. The film’s influence is such that it is still being talked about decades later, and new films in the series are still coming out.

Raging Bull

To follow up Rocky, we have the only other boxing movie that could contend in popularity and influence. Based on the life and memoirs of Jake LaMotta, the film tells a story about the life of the professional boxer. LaMotta is regarded by many as one of the best boxers, known for his strong chin, and his brutal beatings. The film looks at the man’s life, and examines how his temper elevated his career, while absolutely ruining his personal life. Putting much bigger emphasis on the personal side, rather than the sport side, Raging Bull will forever be regarded as one of Martin Scorsese’s best films.

The Wrestler

Directed by the master of psychoanalytical cinema, The Wrestler is Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 film, made as a sort of sister piece to the Black Swan. It stars Mickey Rourke as the professional wrestler Robin Ramzinski (based heavily on Randy Savage), who falls in love with a stripper, and attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The film explores every facet of Ramzinski’s life, and paints a beautiful and tragic portrait of the man.

Honorable Mentions

The aforementioned films are only a few of the greatest sports movies of all time. The sports genre is huge, and it would be unfair to leave this list off, having not mentioned some other of its greatest pieces. Films like Major League, Rudy, Chariots of Fire, and Field of Dreams are all fantastic additions to the genre, and should be seen by any fan of sports, cinema, or both.
