A 90-year-old woman and her dog were rescued by a North Fort Myers neighbor during Ian

North Fort Myers

A 90-year-old woman with no family but a dog survived Hurricane Ian with the help of neighbors who consider her family.

Evelyn Blakelee was at her home in North Fort Myers when water began to seep in.

Blakely says she is very grateful to be alive. Without her family, she stayed at her home in North Fort Myers because she felt she had nowhere else to go. If her neighbors didn’t keep checking on her, or if they showed up after her, she wouldn’t know if she and her dog would have survived.

It’s no secret that Blakelee is fine. “I mow my garden.”

She takes care of her dog, a Maltese named Dottie. “He’s all I have,” said Blakely. “I don’t have a family.”

Blakely said he was home during Ian’s time and that the neighbor across the street checked in frequently.

“Here are the people who supported me,” Blakely said.

When the water level on Glenmont Drive West began to rise, Jenny Boast and her husband rushed in to rescue Blakely and Dottie.

“We couldn’t have done this without the help of everyone on the block,” says Borst.

The Borsts took Blakely and Dottie to the two-story house next door where Mark Weekly lives with his wife.

“We just sat here and got through it. Listen to the wind blow and watch the water rise,” Weekly said.

The next day, Blakely and her dog returned home. A 4-foot storm surge destroyed the flooring and drywall. Now her furniture is out on the curb.

“You can’t think about what you’ve lost. Just think about the future, let everything go, and do the best you can,” Blakely said.

The Borsts and Weeklys who saved and protected Dottie and Blakelee are no longer neighbors. they are family.

“They saved my life and my dog’s life,” said Blakely.

“The area may not have the best homes, but it has the best people,” says Borst.

Luckily, the Blakely house still stands. She said she would follow the advice the next time her officials asked her to evacuate.
