Sports betting in Florida is over, but not ready to start yet

Wink news

Sports betting will be legal on Friday in Florida, but you can’t bet right away. None of the casinos in the state have announced a date to start betting. There are several legal issues that could detain gambling until 2022.

Good news: It’s very likely that it will be clear to some extent in 3 weeks. At that time, the judge will hold a hearing on one of the proceedings to challenge the Game Compact between the state and the Seminoles.

The Seminoles are not ready on weekends. The new ad states that online and face-to-face gambling will begin shortly.

However, three proceedings, including two, filed by the group that owns the Bonita Springs Poker Room are trying to prevent it.

“In the short term, the focus will be on the court hearing on November 5, and at least in the short term, it will be decided,” said sports betting expert Daniel Warrack.

“And that will be really important,” said sports betting expert John Holden.

Wallach and Holden said the proceedings alleged that the mobile betting portion of the compact violated federal law.

If the judge dismisses the proceeding, expect the tribe to begin mobile and face-to-face sports gambling within the next 60 days.

“It certainly seems to be an operational assumption of what comes out of the properties of hard rock, which means they are planning to launch mobile except for injunctions.” Holden said.

Billions of dollars are flowing and no one is going down without the fight. Both experts told us that the proceedings are likely part of the reason the Seminoles are not ready to launch on Friday.

However, a spokesperson told reporters that the tribe had no plans to start October 15. It was the date chosen by Congress in May.

Expect appeal from commercial sites such as poker rooms and anti-gambling groups. If the judge decides in their favor, the appeals from the states and tribes are probably the same.

“It could be late 2022 before the issue is resolved in the Federal Court of Appeals, at which point the losing party will petition the US Supreme Court to be involved if that happens.” Mr. Wallac said.
