Washington — President Joe Biden gives his second State of the Union address. This marks not only his accomplishments and agenda, but a pivotal moment in his assertion of leadership ahead of the expected announcement of his candidacy for re-election.

Unlike his first two years in office, the House is now dominated by Republicans, with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who will be sitting behind a president for the first time, threatening to block Biden’s agenda.

At the outset of his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden acknowledged the changes coming with the 118th Congress, including congratulating newly-elected Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.

“Speaker, I don’t want to ruin your reputation, but I look forward to working with you,” Biden said after turning around and shaking hands with the Republican.

He then congratulated Hakeem Jeffries, the new leader of the House Democrats and the first Black House minority leader in history.

Biden later told Senate Majority Leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer, the longest-serving Senate Majority Leaders in history, that he “won an even bigger majority this time.”

Biden concluded his introduction by praising Honorary Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
