Sabrina Ionescu is once again a threat to its shotmaking, waiting for Liberty to become a triple-double, as in May when Liberty became the youngest owner in WNBA history.
That was before her left ankle became a problem again. The point guard rookie season ended with a terrible sprain after three games, eventually requiring surgery. Ionesk got off the bench in the last four games, including playing against Chicago at Barclays Center on Thursday night after playing in the first two games of his last four games of a western trip with tendonitis.
Ionesk didn’t play much in this latest game. But that was a pain for the whole team. Excellent Sky escaped with a seven-game winning streak of 91-68.
Chicago (9-7), led by Kahleah Copper and Diamond DeShields with 18 points each, swept a total of 43 points in the two-game series. Liberty, 16 of Michaela Onyenwere’s pace, lost 7 of the last 9 and fell to 7-8.
Ionesk played at 13:04 and missed two shots. She contributed only 2 points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds. She was playing 27:01 on Tuesday.
Walt Hopkins said he would return to the starting lineup “in the near future.”
“From what I understand, it doesn’t cure rest,” the coach said. “That means we have to manage it.”
Since she returned, the overall top pick in 2020 has been only 3 to 20.
“I know it was a struggle for her,” Kia Stokes said. “I think it was mentally difficult, but she’s a fighter. She’s doing a lot of rehab and treatment. I think she’s been doing much better.
“If she feels it more, a few people think she’ll be completely fine … she’s a great player and a great competitor.”
Liberty was 3 out of 4 to 25, but missed 13 of the first 16 shots and 16 of 22 shots in the first quarter. However, they made two turnovers and dragged 18-14.
The league’s worst-selling team committed 2 in the first minute of the second quarter, ending at 21 and scoring 18 points.
The game escaped in those second 10 minutes. Sky started with an 11-3 run, started with DeShields’ three-point play and ended with a 3 on her right with a 29-17 lead.
The Betnijah Laney jumper cut it to 35-25. Then Chicago put it on the floor. DeShields filled three more and started a 20-2 closing run, with a break to a 55-27 game. The margin reached 30 in the third earliest stage.
